What is body image distortion?
Body image refers to how people feel about their appearance. Distorted body image refers to a distorted perception of your shape. People feel dissatisfied with some part of their appearance.
People with distorted body image have a greater likelihood of developing an eating disorder and are more likely to suffer from feelings of depression, isolation, low self-esteem, and obsession with weight loss.
Symptoms and causes
Signs and symptoms of BDDinclude:
- You start comparing the disliked features to those of other people.
- You Attempt to hide perceived flaws with styling, makeup or clothes.
- You are obsessed with somebody parts such as face, skin colour, hair, breast size or muscles.
- You always need reassurance about your looks.
- You may have social anxiety.
Although the exact cause of BDD is still unclear, experts believe it is related to problems with serotonin, one of the brain’s chemical neurotransmitters. It is more common in people whose family members also have BDD. People with other mental health disorders, specifically depression and anxiety are also more likely to have BDD.
